Paul Merson predicts the score for Tottenham vs Brentford

We might be four games into the new Premier League season but Paul Merson feels that the clash against Brentford is already a must-win for Ange Postecoglou after back-to-back defeats against Newcastle and Arsenal.

Spurs are struggling to pick up wins

Tottenham would have felt that they missed a big opportunity last weekend against a weakened Arsenal side, who were missing the likes of Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Spurs’ 1-0 defeat in the North London Derby followed an all too familiar pattern, with the Lilywhites dominating the ball but struggling to break down their opponents, only to be punished after a lapse in concentration.

Tottenham fans would have hoped to see their side register a statement win against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup to get some confidence back but in the end, the Lilywhites came close to being knocked out, with a late rescue act from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson saving their blushes.

Tottenham vs Brentford score prediction

Merson believes that nothing but three points will do for Tottenham against the Bees and backed the home side to edge out their opponents.

The former Arsenal midfielder told Sportskeeda: “I was very disappointed with Tottenham last week. They were also fortunate to go through to the next round of the Carabao Cup. I’d have really fancied Brentford to get the win here, but Yoane Wissa will be a massive miss for them. That injury to him is a huge loss for Brentford.

“They troubled Manchester City early on in the last game, but ultimately they didn’t do justice to the chances they created. Without Wissa in that team, I’d back Tottenham to beat Brentford. Bryan Mbeumo on his own won’t be enough to beat Spurs.

“Ange Postecoglou has to win this match to take some pressure off him. Spurs are in a little league of their own and how they perform against the teams in that group will define their season. This little league includes teams like Newcastle, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa.

“Of course, the defeat to Arsenal would have hurt them badly considering the magnitude of the fixture. But they have to put that behind them and get the win against Brentford.”

Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Brentford.

This is a must-win game as a draw or a loss will several dent the player’s confidence and put some doubts into their minds regarding our current system. It might be difficult for Postecoglou to recover from that as his system relies on having complete buy-in from the players.
