Paul Merson surprises Spurs fans by making positive statement on life under Ange
Paul Merson says that Tottenham Hotspur have played better than Newcastle this season despite the respective league positions of the two sides.
Spurs have just one win in four games
Newcastle are currently sitting in third place in the Premier League table, having won three and drawn one of their first four league games, with the Magpies looking like they might battle it out for a top-four finish this season.
In contrast, Spurs only have four points on the board after four matches, having lost their last two in a row.
One of those defeats came at St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe’s men making Tottenham pay for their missed chances and scoring a couple on the break to emerge 2-1 winners.
Paul Merson leaps to Tottenham’s defence
Even though we are only a little over a month into the new season, there already seems to be a doom and gloom surrounding Spurs, with Ange Postecoglou coming in for plenty of criticism.
However, Merson believes that there is not a lot separating Tottenham and Newcastle, opining that the Lilywhites have actually played better so far this season.
The former Arsenal man told Sky Sports: “Tottenham are not a million miles away, they’re not a million miles away. I know this sounds silly but they’ve played better than Newcastle this season and Newcastle are unbeaten.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think anyone in their right mind will say that any of Tottenham’s Premier League performances were poor this season.
However, the North Londoners have undoubtedly been poor in the final third, with none of our attacking players being decisive and positive, which is a big worry.
