Postecoglou explains what Spurs should have done even better vs Brentford
After a disappointing couple of results in the Premier League, Tottenham were back to winning ways with a victory over Brentford this weekend, and Ange Postecoglou says it’s the least his team deserved.
Spurs could have won by more
Spurs fell behind very early on, with Brentford forward Bryan Mbuemo giving the away team the lead within the first 30 seconds.
But, that goal only served to kick Tottenham into gear, and Ange Postecoglou‘s side established their dominance throughout the first half. Goals from Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson saw Spurs go in at half-time 2-1 to the good.
A tense second half saw Tottenham wrap up the win with a brilliantly-taken James Maddison goal to secure all three points, and Postecoglou has told the BBC that he is pleased with how his team sealed the win.
He said: “It was a good win, a good performance. Our performances have been good all year but today we got the result as well which is the most pleasing but. We should have won by a fair bit more but we still got the job done.”
Postecoglou was not comfortable at 2-1
Brentford kept themselves in the game for much of the second half, and threatened to get back on level terms a number of times.
Recognising the importance of the third goal his team scored, Postecoglou added: “You’re always keeping the opposition in the game [at 2-1] and it’s been the story of our season so far. It was a quality goal from three of our four captains, who I think got involved in it. It was important to finish the game off.”
Tottenham’s dominance paid off
Tottenham really took the game to Brentford after the Bees scored the first goal, and Spurs ended up with 23 shots (10 of them on target), compared to Brentford’s six.
Interestingly, the Lilywhites didn’t have the majority of possession this week, though, with 47% to Brentford’s 53%, which just proves how important it is to make the most of the chances you do get, regardless of how much you have the ball.
