Postecoglou reveals what he loved about Dominic Solanke in Spurs win
Dominic Solanke bagged his first goal for Tottenham in the win over Brentford on Saturday afternoon, but Ange Postecoglou was more pleased with the striker’s work rate throughout the game.
Dominic Solanke showed incredible work ethic
Since making his big move from Bournemouth to Spurs this summer, there has been a lot of attention and pressure on Dominic Solanke.
As the man chosen to lead the line for Ange Postecoglou‘s team, goals will always be the main metric Solanke is judged against, and he is finally off the mark for his new club.
A James Maddison effort was parried by Brentford keeper Mark Flekken, but Solanke was on hand in the box to apply a simple finish and draw his side level early on.
While Postecoglou highlighted the significance of that goal, the Spurs boss appeared to be more happy with the way his striker performed overall and worked for the team.
He told the BBC: “Dom worked his socks off. He was gone at the end. He is still getting back to match fitness, but I know he is going to provide so much for us in that central position. All strikers love goals so it will be a great moment for him especially at home.”
Solanke’s game by the numbers
A deeper dive into Solanke’s performance, through the eyes of the statistics from WhoScored, tell us the Spurs man was not only fairly effective in his attacking role, but also displayed strong passing and more defensive elements to his game.
He registered four shots throughout the match and won two aerial duels. Solanke also made one successful dribble and was fouled twice.
Defensively, Solanke made one key clearance, while he also registered 19 passes (53% of which were accurate), and delivered one cross.
Solanke is the striker Postecoglou wanted
Naturally, Spurs signed Solanke because they hope he can score a lot of goals for them. But that performance today — the pressing, the hold-up play, the positional play — proves that Postecoglou was right to target Solanke.
Those aspects of the game are exactly what Postecoglou wants and needs from his central striker; someone who will work hard, provide for his teammates, and be in the right places at the right time.
