Postecoglou reacts to Brennan Johnson’s ‘top’ performance against Brentford
Brennan Johnson has not had an easy time of late, but he once again got himself on the scoresheet with another big goal for Spurs today, and Ange Postecoglou has revealed how happy he is for the young winger.
Two goals in two for Brennan Johnson
After being made the scapegoat by some sections of the Spurs fanbase recently, Brennan Johnson made the decision to deactivate his social media accounts.
However, he has found the perfect way to respond to his critics this week. First, scoring the winner against Coventry in midweek, and then coming up with another important goal in the win over Brentford.
Speaking to the BBC after the game, Postecoglou hyped up the Welshman and suggested his performances on the field are the only thing that matters.
On Brennan Johnson: “He’s had a top week, he’s scored two goals, he’s won us a game to get through in the [League] Cup. Life’s good. Sometimes going through tough moments gives you perspective of what’s important.”
Social media issues put to one side
Speaking to the press after the game (via Football.London), Postecoglou was asked about the contrast between the abuse Johnson gets on social media and the reception he got in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the game.
Discussing the difference, he said: “I really don’t know. I had my say on social media and all that sort of stuff during the week. But anyone who watches Brennan play, if they think he doesn’t give everything he can every week and work as hard as he can for the team and how much he cares, I’ll be very surprised.
“But that’s to one side. For every footballer you’ve got to go through difficult moments and he’s handled it really well. Like I said, I think it gives you a perspective that when the next difficult moment comes – inevitably it always comes – I’m sure he’ll know what’s important to him.”
Johnson is doing all the right things
As Postecoglou says, Johnson is consistently giving 100% to the cause for Spurs, but looking deeper, his statistics prove he is doing very little wrong, too.
According to WhoScored, Johnson has registered a passing success rate of at least 70% in all five league games this season (his highest being a 92.9% against Arsenal). He’s also made one key pass in three of the five matches.
His six shots against Brentford are his highest of the season so far, but he’s averaging three shots per game this term. But, he’s also putting in the effort defensively, too, with ten tackles across the season so far.
