Smoke Eaters Rally in Second to Defeat Vipers 4-3
Trail, BC: The Vernon Vipers held the lead twice in the game, but a strong second period from the Trail Smoke Eaters ultimately handed them a 4-3 defeat on Friday night.
“We had some moments tonight that I liked and some impressive individual performances,” said Assistant Coach Colton Sparrow. “But it wasn’t enough to win. It’s a good league and we have a lot to clean up in order to get 2 points on the road.”
Luke Bibby opened the scoring for the Vipers, followed by a goal from Will Schumacher, who also added an assist for a two-point night. Despite the solid individual performances, Vernon couldn’t hold back the Smoke Eaters’ offensive push.
Vinny Ipri brought the game close, netting his first BCHL goal, but the Smoke Eaters responded quickly. Jason Stefanek was the star for Trail, scoring twice in the second period, while Evan Sundar contributed a goal and an assist. Lucas Lemieux sealed the victory with the eventual game-winner in the middle frame.
In goal, Colin Reay made 25 saves on 29 shots for the Vipers, while Teagan Kendrick stopped 26 of 29 for Trail. Vernon’s special teams were active, going 1-for-4 on the power play and successfully killing off four of five penalties.
The Vipers will look to bounce back on Saturday night when they head to Cranbrook for a 6 p.m. PT puck drop.
