Phillies Jump Peterson In 12-2 Thrashing of Mets
The shortest outing of David Peterson’s season came one start after he made his longest as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped the Mets’ four-game winning streak with a 12-2 victory Friday night before 41,474 fans at Citi Field.
Peterson (9-3) went 3 2/3 innings, allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, and left the game while New York trailed 4-2. Trea Turner greeted reliever Adam Ottavino with an RBI single, and two batters later Alec Bohm hit a three-run homer to make it 8-2. He went 4-for-5 with four RBIs on the night.
In Peterson’s last start, he pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in Philadelphia.
New York’s best chance to get back in the game came in the fifth when Pete Alonso came up with two outs and the bases loaded. Cristopher Sanchez (11-9), however, struck out Alonso looking on three pitches.
The Mets (85-69) got help from the Miami Marlins, who beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3. New York remains two games ahead of the Braves (83-71) in the Wild Card race with eight games to play while the teams are set to meet next week in Atlanta for a three-game series.
Jose Iglesias hit a solo homer in the first and Brandon Nimmo added an RBI ground-out to give the Mets an early 2-0 lead. The Phillies answered with a run in the second on an Edmundo Sosa sacrifice fly and tied it at 2-2 in the third on a Nick Castellanos RBI double.
With the game out of hand, utility player Eddy Alvarez pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Bryce Harper to fly out to left with two on and two out.
The Phillies (92-62) outhit the Mets 17-4 and were 5-for-5 stealing bases. Philadelphia clinched a playoff spot with the win and can secure the division title with a victory over the Mets on Saturday.
