Gamethread: White Sox at Padres
Here we go, stretch run to infamy
The White Sox go from the hopeless den of despair that was Anaheim Stadium, housing the hapless Halos, to a bonafide playoff team on the rise in San Diego. That does not bode well for our chances of avoiding a sweep this weekend!
If swept, the White Sox will return home sharing the all-time most losses in the modern era and still would be in line for possibly becoming the worst MLB team since 1899. To out-lose the 1916 A’s, the White Sox need to go 1-8 the rest of the way, and 2-7 gets them a tie.
(A reminder, 1916 came after Connie Mack sold off and gutted his A’s. Just like the 1899 Cleveland Spiders saw all of their better players sent to the owners “preferred” team. So these White Sox were in league with two clubs who were allowed/encouraged/forced to lose games.)
