Spate of gun violence continues in Antioch
ANTIOCH — A spate of gun violence continued Friday in Antioch, with the latest shooting sending a man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
Gunshots were reported around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Cavallo Road and Sunset Drive, Antioch police Lt. Matthew Koch said in a news release. Officers arrived to find an 18-year-old man suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
The man was listed in critical condition, Koch said.
Police did not announce any arrests or release any other details about the shooting.
“This investigation is in its preliminary stages, and evidence and witness statements are being collected,” Koch said.
Including Friday’s incident, the city has recorded at least a dozen shootings since Sept. 2, when 21-year-old Elijah Scales was gunned down in the 2100 block of Peppertree Way.
The shootings have injured six people total, three of them critically, according to police.
Interim Police Chief Brian Addington is seeking to put an end to the crime wave by rearranging staffing and assigning two officers to patrol the Sycamore Drive corridor, where many of the shootings have taken place, through at least next Tuesday.
“This effort aims to reduce gun violence and provide a sense of safety to the community and local businesses,” he said in a recent statement. “This spate of violence will not be tolerated.”
