While ex-President Donald Trump may be chock-full of controversial remarks, his opponent Vice President Kamala Harris has fired off with one of her own.

The Democratic nominee in a livestream town hall with Oprah Winfrey touted being a gun owner – then issued a blunt warning.

‘If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,’ said Harris on Thursday night.

Winfrey replied: ‘Yes, yes. I hear that, I hear that.’

Harris, after breaking into a laugh, acknowledged the sensitive nature of her comment.

‘Sorry, probably should not have said that,’ Harris said, still chuckling.

‘But my staff will deal with that later.’

Harris uttered the line after Winfrey expressed surprise over the fact that the vice president is a gun owner. Harris said that her vice presidential running mate, Tim Walz, is as well.

The Democratic candidate said she backs the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, which protects the right to keep and bear arms.

‘Here’s my point, Oprah. I’m not trying to take everyone’s guns away. I believe in the Second Amendment,’ Harris said.

She added that the gun control measures she’s pushing ‘are just common sense’. They include strengthening background checks for potential gun buyers and reinstating a federal ban on assault weapons.

Harris also spoke of her town halls at colleges last year when she asked students if they had partaken in active shooter drills when they were in kindergarten through high school.

‘Almost every hand went up,’ she said. ‘It was bone chilling.’

As vice president, Harris lives in the heavily guarded Naval Observatory residence in Washington, DC. She reportedly owns a handgun for personal safety and it is kept in a secure place in her home in California.

Harris made her head-turning comment four days after Secret Service agents prevented an apparent second assassination attempt of Trump at his Florida golf course.

Trump is calling for less restrictions on arms and ammunition.
