Sports briefs: Branson volleyball goes undefeated at Day 1 of Durango
The Branson School girls volleyball team cap off an undefeated day at the Durango Classic in Las Vegas, going 3-0 to win its pool on Friday.
The Bulls (11-2) took down Torrey Pines, Torrance, and Arbor View in straight sets to win Pool 15 with a perfect 6-0 set record.
Branson faces Cornerstone Christian in a qualifying round match at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship bracket as one of the top eight teams. The loser moves on to the second-tier silver bracket.
- Mo O’Sullivan had 19 assists and two aces as San Marin cruised past Concord, 25-8, 25-8, 25-12 on Thursday night. Brianna Nottingham had a team-high 11 kills for the Mustangs (17-3). Jenna Sampson added six kills and four aces. Kylie Zizic had five aces.
Field hockey
Senior Alya Duggan scored the game-winner with an assist from Rowie Scobie as Tam beat Lick-Wilmerding 1-0 on Thursday to solidify the Red-tailed Hawks’ position atop the MCAL field hockey standings.
Tam is riding a four-game streak with a 3-1 win over University, and shutout victories over Marin Catholic (2-0) and Convent (3-0) in the past week.
The Hawks are 6-1 in league, 7-1 overall, ahead of University and Redwood, both 4-1 in league, and 4-2 Marin Catholic.
- Redwood senior Jane Broderick scored with an assist from junior Lucy Jeffers, who also scored an unassisted goal of her own in Thursday’s 2-1 victory over rival Marin Catholic. Giants sophomore goalie Eva Layton stopped eight shots. Marin Catholic got a goal from sophomore Lexie Schmidt off a feed from senior Elsa Greene. Wildcats’ goalie Sam Scheffler had five saves.
Women’s water polo
College of Marin roared to an eight-goal lead in the first period, then held on for a 15-7 victory over host Ohlone in Friday’s Bay Valley Conference opener. Delaney Mannor converted on all six of her shots for the Mariners. Teammate Anabelle Phillips added five goals for Marin and Novato High grad Allie Pierotti scored twice. The Mariners also got goals from Marlee Ostrom and Adriana Thomas. Goalkeeper Marie Fehring, a San Marin grad, had 14 saves and five assists. The Mariners (2-3 overall) are scheduled to host Laney on Wednesday.
Girls tennis
The Wildcats’ Lindsay Lotter locked down a 6-0, 6-4 win over the Hornets’ Annah Chang at No. 2 singles to fuel Marin Catholic’s 7-0 sweep of Novato at the Bay Club Ross Valley on Thursday. Marin Catholic’s Ellie Damiani, Isa Quesada and Ruby Pisaturo also won singles matches.
- Tam High swept host Archie Williams, 7-0, on Thursday, behind singles wins from Maya Risgaard, Maria-Jose Stuart, Annika Hakes and Scarlett Wilson. The Hawks’ top doubled team of Amalie Stoker and Louise McGinness held off the Falcons’ Siena Michelson and Sarah Chamberlin, 6-3, 6-4.
Girls golf
The Giants’ Katelyn Van Dusen shot a 30 at McInnis Park on Thursday to lead Redwood past Terra Linda. Four Redwood players finished in the 30s, with Katherine Kim (33), Taylor Bridges (35) and Chloe Branson (36). Ainsley Gallagher and Mika Ishiguro tied at 40 for the Giants.
