Lafayette Parish School System says recent shooting threat originated out-of-state

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- After a recent social media post circulated online about a possible school shooting in Lafayette Parish, the Lafayette Parish School System worked with local law enforcement to figure out where the post came from.

Tracy Wirtz, LPSS communications and public relations specialist, said the school system notified parents this morning that the matter is being investigated. With the help from local law enforcement agencies, the school system determined that the post originated out-of-state and poses no threat to Lafayette Parish Schools.

Wirtz said someone in the Southside community brought the alleged threat to the attention of the school system.

"The threat wasn't specifically to Southside, it was someone in that Southside community who brought it to our attention. And when you looked at the social media post, it was very vague because you weren't sure what exactly was going on in the post," Wirtz said.

Wirtz said the parish has implemented multiple safety measures designed to protect students and faculty for situations like these.

"Lafayette Parish School System has several protocols in place from the weapons detection system, to fencing around the schools, SROS posted at each and every campus and even more than that to make sure that those students are safe," Wirtz said.

She said the board will continue to work to ensure students can learn and grow in a positive environment with no outside threats.

"The goal of the student being in school is to learn and we want to make sure they are doing that in a place where they feel safe and where the parents feels safe sending them," Wirtz said.

She said all threats are taken seriously, regardless if they are made via social media, phone calls or any other method.

Wirtz advises parents to have conversations with their children about how creating these social media threats can have consequences.
