Postecoglou reveals what he is telling Spurs squad about club’s trophy drought
Ange Postecoglou believes that rather than seeing Tottenham’s long trophy drought as a burden, the players and the coaching staff should see it as an opportunity to do something special.
Spurs haven’t won a trophy since 2008
A lot of Tottenham teams over the last decade and a half have fallen at the final hurdles, with the term ‘bottling’ constantly being thrown at the club as a result.
Perhaps the pressure associated with taking the finals step and winning the trophy is extremely high at Spurs, given the club’s recent history, and one can argue that past Tottenham sides have struggled to cope with that.
However, since walking through the door at Hotspur Way, Postecoglou has been happy to put pressure on himself and talk up his ambitions.
The Australian has explained that he does not view Tottenham’s lack of silverware as added pressure but rather as an opportunity to create history.
Spurs squad have the chance to make history
He urged his players to look at it the same way, pointing out that they have the chance to do something special at Spurs and write their name into the history books.
When asked about Tottenham’s trophy drought, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “You can try to ignore it but it’s a reality. That’s what it is. It’s a fact. So just face up to it mate.
“I kind of flip it. As I keep saying to the guys, ‘What a great opportunity. Imagine you are the ones to do it’. I keep saying, it was the biggest attraction to me coming here.
“I get it, it’s the Premier League and everyone wants to be here. It’s a big club and you do get well rewarded financially and talk to fantastic people like yourselves. All these kinds of things are great attractions but the one that ticked the biggest box for me was ‘imagine I did win something’.
“Imagine it was in my second year. Imagine that happened. That’s something I could reflect pretty fondly on. That’s how I see it. I don’t see it as a burden, I see it as an opportunity. That’s what I keep saying to the players every day. Don’t ignore it. See it as an opportunity to do something special.
It’s not easy. When you say these things and I put it out there, then [the reaction is], ‘Oh my god, what if it doesn’t happen?’ and we’ve lost at the weekend and people are coming for you! But that’s OK. Don’t worry. Think about the flip side of that, if it does happen. That’s what has got to motivate us.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Postecoglou is absolutely correct as this current squad will be aware that they can write their name into Tottenham folklore if they prove to be the ones who can finally cross that line and bring success to N17.
