Jasprit Bumrah: ‘I Adapted My Tactics from Domestic Cricket Due to Lack of Grip’

Leading Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah revealed that, because his stock balls were ineffective due to a lack of grip on the wicket, he tried a variety of deliveries before settling on the one that produced a result on the second day of the first Test match against Bangladesh.

Bumrah was India’s best bowler even if the wicket wasn’t doing much to help him. The legendary pacer caused chaos in Bangladesh’s first innings on Friday, returning with figures of 4/50. He bowled yorkers, bouncers, and length balls.

After play on day two concluded, Bumrah told the official broadcaster, “I had no other option because when I tried to bowl a length ball, the ball wasn’t doing anything, and the ball wasn’t reversing either.”

Because you have to explore as a bowler when not much is happening, I had to give it a shot. Since there was no grip on the wicket, I employed a strategy I’ve also employed in domestic cricket. Today, it worked, and I benefited from that experience.

With tact, he positioned Mushfiqur Rahim. On the sixth stump line, Bumrah produced a delivery that was behind of a length, driving an inside edge off of Rahim’s bat that flew into the clutches of KL Rahul at second slip.

“The ball had become a little old, there wasn’t a lot of movement, but there was some spongy bounce on the wicket,” Bumrah stated.

“I was attempting to evaluate my alternatives because there wasn’t much of a deviation when I tried to bowl a little bit more fully. All I was attempting to do was come up with ways to make it harder to score runs. I concentrated on that, and fortunately, I had the upper hand,” he remarked.

In addition, Bumrah started using bouncers—a delivery style he hardly ever uses in Test matches.

“I don’t usually bowl as many bouncers in Test cricket.” I had to adapt since the weather was bad and I’m only now coming back into Test cricket.

Sweat had caused the ball to get moist, and the seam was wet as well. I had to employ various strategies in order to secure a wicket and impede the scoring of runs. You also pick up these skills as a lower-order batter.

Bumrah disclosed that in light of the challenging circumstances, he spoke with captain Rohit Sharma and they agreed that everyone would bowl brief but impactful periods.

“He has a great understanding of bowling. After a while, everyone is returning due to the severe weather. Since we will soon be playing a Test match, everyone must settle in.

“The topic of discussion was how to make brief spells more powerful. We have impactful spinners and fast bowlers who want to bowl quickly.

“When the ball is new, the seam is hard, and there is some lateral movement, so we wanted to keep coming back quickly and bowl short spells,” he explained.

Because there was no steady swing, the strategy wasn’t always to bowl fuller. A few balls swung, but others didn’t.

We swiftly changed our angles, and I moved around the wicket as a result. However, we concentrated on the support that came with the new ball.”

India leads by a comfortable 308 runs going into the third day on 81/3.
