19-year-old arrested, allegedly tried to bring a gun into high school football game
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A man has been arrested after allegedly bringing a gun to a local high school football game, authorities said.
Ethan Lundberg, 19, of Lafayette, is charged with one count of possession of a firearm in a firearm-free zone and was booked into Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
Lafayette Police Department working security Thursday evening at a Southside High football game being played at Comeaux High School were alerted by the school’s weapons detector that the suspect was attempting to enter the event with a possible firearm. Authorities said the individual was found to indeed be in possession of a gun. Officers were able to secure the gun and Lundberg was placed under arrest.
No one was harmed during the incident, officials said.
Lafayette Parish Superintendent Francis Touchet said the parish's weapons detection system is a large part of making the system safer.
"We've discovered that Lafayette Parish schools and facilities are among the safest not only in the state, but in the country," he said. "The weapons detection system is just one part of our robust security efforts designed to ensure the safety of our students and community."
