Bureau of Land Management offers opportunity to secure wild horses and burros

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hosting a two-day wild horse and burro purchasing or adoption event to include offering up to $1,000 dollars to adopt an untrained animal on October 4.

According to BLM, the goal of the event is provide every horse and burro a safe home with an incentive for every animal in Idabel. Previously in July 2021, BLM leaders says, steps were taken to secure animals through its Adoption Incentive Program while maintaining its management goals. Since 1973, BLM confirmed placement of more than 280,000 animals in approved homes.

Participants can expect animals at the event to be adult and yearling horses along with burros, said BLM.

The event is set to feature 150 animals for adoption with BLM staff ready to approve application onsite. Adoptions will take place October 4, Noon - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 5, 8:00 a.m. - Noon.

Qualifications for adoption:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old, with no record of animal abuse
  • Qualified homes must have a minimum of four hundred square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water, and shelter
  • A six-foot corral fence is required for adult horses; five feet for yearlings; and four-and-a-half feet for burros
  • All animals must be loaded in covered, stock-type trailers with swing gates and sturdy walls and floors
