Pundit blasts Postecoglou for ‘taking liberties’ with Tottenham this week
Jamie Redknapp blasts Ange Postecoglou for making wholesale changes to Tottenham’s starting eleven against Coventry City, insisting that his selection almost cost his side dearly.
The Carabao Cup undoubtedly represents Tottenham’s best chance of ending their 17-year trophy drought, which is something that Postecoglou has repeatedly reiterated that he wants to do this season.
One would have thus expected the Australian to name a fairly strong team for the clash against Coventry but instead, he decided to make eight changes to the starting eleven.
That move nearly backfired as the Lilywhites struggled to break down the Championship side and looked set to be heading out of the competition until the final few minutes of the game.
A late rescue act from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson saved Postecoglou’s blushes on the night but the Tottenham boss defended his selection decision, insisting that some players in his squad needed minutes while others needed rest (Football.London).
Postecoglou took liberties with starting line-up
However, this does not sit well with Redknapp, who delivered a scathing assessment of the Tottenham boss’ decision.
The former Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports (18/09/24 as relayed by The Daily Mail): “I didn’t like the team he picked. He took liberties. I thought he would’ve learned from Fulham last season but he didn’t pick a strong enough team. But he’s got away with that one.
“You can tell they have a lack of confidence right now. They didn’t pass the ball well enough and they let Coventry creep into the game.
“I do struggle when managers leave out these big-name players – I don’t know why they don’t start the likes of Son and then bring them off when you’re winning.
“This was always going to be a tough game and a potential banana skin because of what Coventry have done in recent years. The team he’s picked has given them a problem and they were very, very fortunate.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I think the same people who criticise Ange for rotating his squad would criticise him for not doing so if key players pick up injuries. The whole point of strengthening the squad is to use the fringe players for games like the one on Wednesday.
