WBSC Men's Softball World Cup 2024 - Day 4 Live Blog: Guatemala vs Netherlands underway

Welcome to the fourth day at the WBSC Men's Softball World Cup Group C. This is the last day of the Opening Round, and with USA holding first place no matter what, the other three Play Offs spots are still up for grabs. Guatemala, Japan, Colombia and Netherlands will battle through the first three games of the day to decide tomorrow's Play Offs teams.

Guatemala and Japan are both 2-1 in the standings and today they will close the Opening Round with a doubleheader. Guatemala are playing Netherlands, followed by a showdown against Japan at 1pm. The Asian champions then will meet with Colombia to close the Opening Round at 4 pm. First place USA will finish the Opening Round against South Africa, the only eliminated team at the beginning of the day. First pitch at 7pm.

- Two tickets on offer to the Finals 2025, which will be played in Prince Albert, Canada in July next year

- Group C completes the group stage of the WBSC Men's Softball World Cup 2024/2025

Group A, was played in Hermosillo, Mexico, from 12 to 16 June with Dominican Republic and Australia earning a ticket to the Finals.  

Group B was hosted in Prince Albert, Canada, from 10 to 14 July; with No. 1 Argentina and No. 10 New Zealand advancing to the Finals. No. 3 Canada secured a wild card 

- World No. 4 Japan, No. 7 USA, No. 13 Guatemala, No. 17 Colombia, No. 18 South Africa and No. 19 Netherlands go head to head in Group C at OGE Energy Field at Devon Park, Oklahoma, USA. 

- Group C features two medallists - five-time World Champions USA, and three-time medallists Japan (two silvers, one bronze).

OGE Energy Field at Devon Park will host the women's softball competition at the LA28 Olympic Games

Schedule & Results

Guatemala are playing the Netherlands in a crucial game for both squads. Holding a 1-3 record in the standings, the European team need a win to keep alive their Play Offs hopes. A loss for them will represent automatic elimination from the top four. On the other hand, a win for Guatemala will qualify them for the Play Offs. This game is their first meeting in a Men's Softball World Cup.

After the first game, Guatemala will stay on the field to take on Japan in the second contest of the day. This is also the first time both teams face off in a Men's Softball World Cup. Japan will try to bounce back from yesterday's loss to USA, aiming to secure the second place in the standings. First pitch a 1pm.

Colombia and Japan will define the final standings in the 4pm game. This will be their second game in the history of the competition. On 4 March 2013, they faced in Auckland, New Zealand, with a 9-2 win for the Japanese team. Elkin Chinchilla and Ramiro Escorcia pitched for Colombia that day. 

In the final game of the Opening Round, USA will take on South Africa. The hosts have secured first palce and will play the Final tomorrow at 4pm. On the other hand, South Africa will finish sixth in the Opening Round, and will play on Saturday 10am against the fifth-place finisher.
