Sports briefs: San Marin picks up first league win against San Rafael
Brianna Nottingham had a team-high 12 kills as the San Marin High girls volleyball team earned its first league win of the season, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 against San Rafael on Wednesday.
Sylvia Tuerke had eight kills and two blocks for the Mustangs (16-3, 1-1). Gabi Ginocchio had 22 assists, Brooke Brumley had 18 digs, and Alison Hoburg had three kills and three blocks.
- Natalia Clifford filled up the stat sheet with 12 kills, five digs, two blocks, and two aces in Tam’s 25-9, 25-11, 25-14 win against Archie Williams (1-13, 1-1) on Wednesday. Emmeline Sandgren added 20 assists, four blocks, and three aces for Tam (11-3, 2-0). Jade Curtin-Savala had 14 digs and three assists and Natalie Stanford had six kills, five aces, and five digs.
- Ellie Corsello had a team-high 11 kills to lead Branson to a 25-11, 25-7, 25-18 victory against Terra Linda (11-3, 0-1) on Wednesday. Anna Jacobs had six aces for the Bulls (8-2, 2-0).
- Marin Catholic (10-4, 1-1) picked up its first MCAL win with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-12 victory against Novato (6-11, 0-2) on Wednesday.
Girls water polo
Archie Williams picked up its second MCAL win of the young season, taking down Tam 11-4 on Thursday. The boys game, a highly anticipated game between two playoff teams from a year ago, was also won by Archie Williams, 12-9. - San Rafael went 1-3 at the Sierra Shootout last weekend, despite being limited to just seven players for the entire tournament. The Bulldogs players — Alex Markwick, Anya Kelly, Alma Camacho, Ella Clark, Maddy Janzen, Katie Garcia, and Maya Kux — racked up 96 minutes of game time in less than 36 hours, getting six goals by freshman Markwick in a victory over Del Campo. San Rafael also battled Notre Dame of Belmont into overtime before eventually falling 7-6.
Boys cross country
Branson’s Jasper James set a winning pace of 17 minutes, 4 seconds ahead of five Marin Catholic runners to win Tuesday’s three-team boys cross country race.
Marin Catholic beat Branson, 20-38, and the Wildcats beat Terra Linda, 15-50. The Bulls beat the Trojans, 15-44.
Marin Catholic’s Will Silloway, Jonnie Choi, Alex Willard, Robert Hadsell and Leo Robillard finished within 42 seconds of each other, placing 2-6. Terra Linda’s Shota and Kenta Levijarvi both finished in 19:14.00, taking the 13th and 14th places overall.
Girls golf
Lexi Ferguson carded a 44 as Marin Catholic secured a 192-210 win against Tam at Mill Valley Golf Course on Thursday. Alessia Ducati paced Tam with a 46.
- Branson’s Lizzy Liu shot a 38 at Indian Valley as the Bulls beat San Marin and Terra Linda in a three-team match Wednesday. The Bulls finished with a 191 to the Mustangs’ 206 and the Trojans’ 231. Valentina Gudino was low medalist for San Marin with a 45, and Mia Schlotman shot a 51 to lead Terra Linda.
- Tam High’s Alessia Ducati shot a personal-best 34 for McInnis Park on Wednesday. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Ayla Koch-Bergren and Scout Brocklehurst each shot a 44, again a personal-best for McInnis. Novato’s Hayley Picceti led the Hornets with a 42.
Girls tennis
Branson got a win from Siena Yang at No. 2 singles and swept the doubles matches to hold off Terra Linda 4-3 on Thursday. Warrin had a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory against Jamie Schmidt. TL got wins from Kylie Lee, Chloe Sason, and Mimi Kemp at Nos. 1, 3, and 4 singles, respectively.
- Clare Zhu and Brooke Bested won the top two singles matches for San Marin in a 7-0 victory against San Rafael on Thursday. Aashna Selvaraj and Scottie Barksdale had the other two singles wins.
- Branson swept Tam, 7-0, in a match that took two days to finish with some competitive scores. The Bulls’ Mirabel Arlander held off the Red-tailed Hawks’ Maya Risgaard, 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 for the win at No. 1 singles. Branson’s Katie Warrin won a nail-biter at No. 2 singles against Siena Moglen, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0.
- Host Redwood swept Marin Catholic, 7-0, with all matches settled in two sets on Tuesday. The Giants’ top doubles pair of Ella Povio and Julia Laury held off the Wildcats’ Georgia Compagno and Heidi Koch, 6-4, 6-0.
