Seven Spurs fringe players who will get plenty of Europa League minutes – opinion

0

Tottenham begin their mission to win the Europa League later this month, and the competition presents a great chance for Ange Postecoglou to give game time to some of his fringe players. Here are seven we hope and expect to play in the league stage.

Brandon Austin

With four goalkeepers in the Europa League squad, we imagine Guglielmo Vicario will be rested for much of the initial phase of the tournament. Brandon Austin signed a new contract at Spurs in the summer, and he simply has to be used ahead of Fraser Forster now.

Radu Dragusin

Radu Dragusin has been extremely patient, waiting in the wings for opportunities whenever Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven are unavailable. He has proven time and time again that he’s a top-quality centre-half, and he will very likely be a regular fixture of Postecoglou’s starting XI in the Europa League.

Alfie Dorrington

Away from Tottenham’s 23-man squad, Postecoglou has the chance to call upon some of his youth talent, and we’d love to see Alfie Dorrington get a chance with the first-team. The young defender was named on the bench a handful of times last season, has been impressing for the Under-21s, and with only six defensive players in the primary squad, there’s every chance Dorrington will be needed.

Archie Gray

One of Tottenham’s new signings this summer, Archie Gray has been mightily impressive both on the pitch and behind the scenes, and will no doubt be given the chance to shine from the start in most of these league stage games. His versatility — Gray can play in central midfield or at right-back — will be very useful for Postecoglou.

Lucas Bergvall

Much like Gray, Bergvall arrived at the club this summer and has quickly established himself as a useful member of the first-team squad. He’s already featured as a substitute in all three league games, and it has been suggested that September will be a big month for the Swedish star, as he looks to make his first start for the club in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League (GiveMeSport).

Mikey Moore

We’ve seen flashes of what Mikey Moore is capable of, but we want more. The 17-year-old is the most exciting young player at Spurs right now, and he already got a small taste of first-team football last season. There’s no reason why he can’t get more substantial minutes against the likes of Qarabag, Ferencvaros, and Elfsborg over the next few months, and he could make a real impact if given the chance.

Will Lankshear

Will Lankshear has climbed up in the pecking order at Spurs when it comes to forward options, and is now seen as the third-choice striker behind Dominic Solanke and Richarlison. It’s unlikely he will get much in the way of meaningful minutes across the season, but we expect him to be given a cameo appearance here and there in the Europa League.

Who knows, maybe Lankshear can have similar success to his predecessor, Harry Kane, who also scored his first-ever senior goal in this competition?
