Las Llaves

0

Las Llaves is a minimalist set of four attachable, sculpture-like pieces created by Barcelona-based duo Turbina. Turbina’s work continuously revolves around the concepts of time, the cosmos and the unknown. For this project, Minerva Capdevila and Mateo Fumero have drawn inspiration from science fiction, a genre they believe allows “the vastness of the cosmos to coexist with our most primitive, intimate senses”. Much like the Monolith in Kubrick’s 2001: Space Odyssey, they have created four pieces whose purpose, at first glance, is not immediately obvious. Futuristic yet archaic in form, Las Llaves evoke a sense of mysticism that invites us to a contemplative, almost devotional meditation in an age overwhelmed by a constant stream of information.

The four pieces, named A, B, C and D, can be assembled in pairs (A with B, C with D) around a crystal without the need for screws or tools, thanks to their precisely engineered fit. Made from Stone Cast—a material Turbina accidentally invented from the reaction of an organic compound with alpha plaster—the pieces have a smooth, natural finish, that is both weather-resistant and lightweight. This material also facilitates the creation of hollow forms that are easy to transport and manoeuvre. Depending on how they are arranged, Las Llaves can function as coffee tables, low stools, minimal shelving or, simply, as sculptural art pieces.
