In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Washington Spirit is celebrating the diverse community members and leaders from around the DMV who are advocating for change, creating a lasting impact, and proudly embracing their identities and cultures.

Orlando Gonzales (he/him)

Growing up Mexican American, Orlando’s unique heritage fuels his passion for activism within both the LGBTQ+ and Hispanic communities. From elevating Hispanic culture to leading initiatives like Pride to the Polls, he’s dedicated to fostering inclusivity and empowerment.

On Hispanic Heritage Month:

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate and reflect on the invaluable contributions of Hispanic people to the United States. It is also an opportunity to elevate our language, culture, and history, fostering greater education and awareness about our identity, the ways we have shaped society, and our unique place within the rich tapestry of Hispanic cultures.

On identity:

Understanding my family’s history and culture is vital, as it instills in me a profound sense of pride and identity. It allows me to see how I fit into a larger, more complex mosaic.

On community:

The most profound life lessons and insights I have gained about being part of a community revolve around the importance of lifting each other up, supporting one another, and sharing resources.

On responsibility:

We must remember that we are a collective political and economic force, and it is our responsibility to harness that power for the greater good of the community.
