Steven Kwan IL’d; Myles Straw promoted, pinch runs, gets picked off 7 seconds later

Morning N&N for Sept 18, 2024

Tuesday was full of bad news. Steven Kwan was placed on the IL. Myles Straw rejoined the team. Carlos Carrasco was DFA’d. Brutal, brutal, most brutal.

Then the Guardians went out and lost a baseball game.

Gavin Williams was better. He allowed 2 runs in 5 innings. Struck out 7 but walked 2.

Eli Morgan and Tim Herrin got through the 6th and 7th with just a single issue—a Bo Naylor throw to second that hit Morgan. He seemed to be fine afterwards, though.

The Guardians scored their only run on a 4th inning Lane Thomas homer. He and Kyle Manzardo are the only players on the team with ISOs higher than .250 this month. Sad.

Manzardo singled in the 7th and then Straw pinch ran for him. Before you could even roll your eyes at That Guy being back on the team, That Guy got picked off and the bases were back to empty.

The game would have remained close except for how bad Nick Sandlin is still pitching. He allowed a 2-run homer in the 8th, meaning that when the Guardians loaded the bases in the 9th, they had to bring all 3 runs in. They got none of them and the game ended 4-1.

• The Tigers beat the Royals again, which lowers Cleveland’s magic number and keeps Detroit from falling any further behind the Twins.
• The Dodgers still can’t pitch. They gave up 11 runs to the Marlins, which was so many that even their offense (9) could not overcome it.
