Israel expands war aims to halt Hezbollah attacks on Northern border

0

Israel announced on Tuesday, September 17, the expansion of its war against Hamas to enable northern Israel residents to return to their homes, which were evacuated due to clashes with Hezbollah militants.

The Israeli security cabinet approved the decision to expand the war on Monday. Hezbollah’s near-daily attacks started after the Gaza war began, forcing thousands to flee.

Hezbollah, supported by Iran like Hamas, has indicated it would halt attacks if a cease-fire deal for Gaza is reached. However, efforts to achieve a cease-fire have dragged on for months.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is visiting Egypt to engage key regional partners in proposing a revised cease-fire plan. Talks continue with Egypt and Qatar to find common ground.

The U.S. has not provided a specific timeline for the cease-fire proposal but aims to secure a truce and facilitate the release of remaining hostages taken by Hamas in October 2023.

Blinken will co-chair the U.S.-Egypt Strategic Dialogue, which will focus on securing a cease-fire, releasing hostages, alleviating Palestinian suffering, and promoting regional security.

Meanwhile, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Gaza highlighted the severe crisis in Gaza, urging for a cease-fire and unrestricted humanitarian access as aid deliveries continue to face challenges.

Hamas triggered the conflict with its October 2023 attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and led to 250 hostages being taken. Israel’s response has resulted in over 41,200 Palestinian deaths.
