India vs Bangladesh 2024: Yashasvi Jaiswal just few runs away from creating history in WTC, set to surpass Virat Kohli

New Delhi: Young India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is now 132 runs from writing history in the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). Jaiswal is likely to open the batting, along with captain Rohit Sharma, in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh that commences September 19 in Chennai. Jaiswal, who has notched up 1028 runs in the World Test Championship 2023-25 would look to enter the record books as India start the series against Bangladesh. If the young 22-year-old manages 132 runs across the two Tests, he would go on to surpass Virat Kohli for the most number of runs by an Indian batter in a single edition of the WTC.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to take over the record of former India captain Ajinkya Rahane who has scored 1,159 runs during the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle of 2019-21. Interestingly, Jaiswal is one among only three Indian batters who have scored more than a thousand runs in a single WTC cycle, of whom Rohit Sharma and Rahane were the previous ones. His stand in this cycle is yet another milestone showing how fast he has risen in international cricket.

Meanwhile, Yashaswi Jaiswal now sits at joint second in WTC 2023-25 scoring charts tied with England’s Ben Duckett on 1,028 runs. And that does well enough to place him into fine company as he further simplifies himself for India’s Test batting lineup.

However, Jaiswal is only 371 runs behind Joe Root, the best scorer in WTC 2023-25 with 1,398 runs. This form at present makes him much more likely to take the top position from Root and be at the top in this cycle itself.

The Indian team currently holds the numero uno position in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 68.52. They have a couple of home Tests ahead against Bangladesh, followed by three home Tests against New Zealand in the near future. And more challenging tasks follow in the form of a five-Test series away, which they would want to better out in Australia. All these matches are crucial for India as they do not want to lose their leading position from the current standing in the World Test Championship.

Bangladesh is also in complete shape, as they also managed to achieve a historic 2-0 whitewash against Pakistan to win their very first Test series on Pakistani soil. They had walked off with an intimidating 10-wicket victory in the first Test and then an impressive six-wicket victory in the second one. This performance really gets across the booming strength of Bangladesh in Test cricket as they approach the series against India.

India’s squad for the 1st Test of the Bangladesh Test series: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
