Stock market today: Asian shares are mixed as Wall Street gears up for an interest rate cut
Shares are mixed in Asia as world markets gear up for the Federal Reserve's most anticipated meeting in years. Tokyo's Nikkei index fell 1% and Hong Kong advanced. Markets in mainland China were closed. On Monday, the Dow rose 228 points, or 0.6%, to surpass its prior all-time high set a few weeks ago. The S&P 500, a much more comprehensive and widely followed index, edged 0.1% higher to within 0.6% of its own record set in July. The Nasdaq composite slipped 0.5% as Apple and Nvidia gave back some of their big gains. Treasury yields eased ahead of Wednesday's expected cut to interest rates by the Fed.
