Myanmar’s death toll from recent floods has risen to at least 113 following heavy rains brought on by Typhoon Yagi, according to a report on Sunday by the country’s military government, Reuters reported.

According to government spokesman Zaw Min Tun, at least 320,000 people have been displaced, and 64 remain missing. Tun provided updates in a late-night bulletin on state-run MRTV.

The government is conducting rescue and rehabilitation efforts in response to the widespread damage caused by the floods.

Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, has also caused significant devastation in Vietnam and Thailand, with rivers flooding cities and claiming hundreds of lives.

The flooding in Myanmar began last Monday, with state media reporting at least 74 deaths by Friday, and the toll has since continued to rise.

Efforts to gather further information on deaths and damage have been hampered by damaged infrastructure and disrupted communication lines.

State media reported that the floods destroyed five dams, four pagodas, and over 65,000 houses, highlighting the extensive damage caused by the disaster. The destruction has left countless people homeless and struggling for basic necessities.

The situation is dire, with about one-third of Myanmar’s 55 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. However, access restrictions and security risks have made it difficult for aid agencies like the International Committee of the Red Cross to operate effectively in many areas, exacerbating the crisis and hindering recovery efforts.
