“He sang as well…”: R Ashwin reveals about Ravi Shastri’s unexpected karaoke night

The Indian team is set to travel to Australia in November to play the 5-match Border-Gavaskar series. Having won the previous 2 series in 2018/19 and 2020/21 by a margin of 2-1, the Indian team will be looking to make it a hat-trick of Test series triumphs on Australian soil. This time, however, the challenge grows significantly with 5 Tests, as opposed to 4 in the previous outings.  

The 20/21 series triumph was quite memorable for the Indian fans not only due to India’s emphatic victory but also for the indomitable spirit that they displayed. India’s captain at that time, Virat Kohli had left the series after the first Test and the team also faced several injury setbacks like that of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and KL Rahul among others.

Despite a shocking collapse in the Adelaide Test which saw the Men in Blue get bowled out for only 36 runs, their lowest-ever total in Test cricket, the side showcased incredible grit to turn things around and script an incredible comeback.

In the aftermath of the crushing Adelaide loss, morale in the Indian camp was at an all-time low, however head coach at that time, Ravi Shastri played a pivotal role in restoring belief within the squad. Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s key players in that series, has now revealed how he attempted to revive the players’ mood.

The veteran spinner revealed that during their team dinner, Shastri switched on the karaoke and started singing. Soon, the players followed him as well.

“We weren’t thinking of a series win at all, because the whole team atmosphere was down. But in the evening, Ravi bhai organised a team dinner, and he sang as well. He switched on the karaoke and started singing. Slowly, others followed too,” Ashwin told journalist Vimal Kumar on YouTube.

“Virat was leaving the team. So, our intention was to be positive, go to Melbourne and win. We didn’t think of series, we kept small targets, we took each match individually after that,” Ashwin added.
