7 Toxic Types Of First Dates That Should Not Lead To A Second Date
Dates where they’re doing all the talking. If they’re genuinely interested in your life, then they should be asking questions. They should be trying to learn more about you. They shouldn’t be spending the entire time going on about their own life. Of course, the opposite is also true. If they’re expecting you to divulge your life story and are acting secretive about their past, you should be wary. On good dates, there should be a give and take, a back and forth. If it feels one-sided, that’s not a great sign.
Dates where they’re constantly shit-talking their exes. If you ask about their past relationships and they respectfully point out a few problems with their last partner, you can probably let it slide. But if they’re randomly going on rants about every single person they’ve dated, it’s a red flag. It’s only a matter of time until they start speaking about you this way. And even if they were fawning over their ex, you probably don’t want to date someone who still has the last person at the front and center of their mind.
Dates where the other person is barely present. The other person shouldn’t be staring at their phone the whole time. They shouldn’t be texting other people or scrolling through social media when you’re sitting right across from them. They should be present and engaged in the conversation. They should be interested in hearing what you have to say and spending quality time with you.
Dates where they show up unreasonably late. If they have a solid excuse, you can’t hold this against them. However, if they don’t seem to care about wasting your time, it proves they don’t value your time. They think they can come around whenever it’s convenient for them without worrying about your schedule. And that’s a recipe for disaster.
Dates where they get drunk–and mean. Everyone overdoes it from time to time, especially when they’re nervous. However, if they’re already drinking much more than makes you comfortable on the first date, they might not be the one for you. Especially if the way their attitude changes when they’re drunk is off-putting. You don’t want to end up with someone who only treats you right when they’re sober.
Dates where they make you feel belittled. Usually, people are on their best behavior during first dates. If this person is making you feel bad about yourself now, then it’ll only grow worse down the line. Besides, dates are supposed to be fun. They’re not supposed to make you feel bad about your clothes or weight or music taste. If this person doesn’t appreciate you, they don’t deserve you.
Dates where you feel uncomfortable. There’s a difference between feeling nervous around an attractive stranger and feeling complete discomfort. If someone is creeping you out, pushing your boundaries, or giving you bad vibes, you don’t have to make the date last. You’re allowed to leave in the middle of it. You should never sacrifice your safety because you’re worried about appearing rude.
