The exact spot where the dead man was discovered has been described as being between Playa Mujeres, a popular beach in Lanzarote with white sand, and another called Playa de Las Coloradas.
It was not clear last night what could have happened, although visitors to the area are warned to wear good footwear as the paths are quite rocky.
The grim discovery was made earlier today. It is not known yet how the alarm was raised.
Civil Guard officers went to the scene along with Civil Protection officers and local police employed by Yaiza Town Hall, the municipality Playa Blanca is part of.
Cops are expected to release more details about the discovery tomorrow.
It comes weeks after a British hiker was found dead and another was missing after they got lost in the mountains of Majorca during a storm.
The body was reportedly found near the spot where cops had begun their search in the Spanish paradise island.
Police said the body that had been found was that of a missing woman, not the man as first confirmed to the media.
The pair are believed to have been a couple, local reports say.
They were reportedly accompanied by relatives who were rescued from flooding caused by a sudden downpour.
The Civil Guard said: “With regards to the search operation that is being conducted in the Sa Calobra area, the body discovered corresponds with that of a woman and the person still missing is a man.”
The force added: “Work in the Torrent de Pareis itself to find the missing person has been suspended until a storm in the area abates.
“It will be re-initiated once the storm passes.”
Well-placed sources said that a body had been spotted by the Civil Guard helicopter.
The Brit was found after 10 people were trapped by flash floods in a Majorcan mountain range.
