Match Preview: Queen’s Park vs Greenock Morton

0

Championship Football resumes this weekend for Queen’s Park after a successful foray into the SPFL Trust Trophy at The City Stadium against Edinburgh City last Sunday.

The Spiders’ opponents will be Greenock Morton in what will be the first encounter between the sides at The city Stadium, but the ninth meeting since Queen’s Park secured a Championship place in 2022.

The eight previous meetings have brought little joy to the south-side of Glasgow team with the Greenock men having won five times and the other three games ending in draws. Had a Steven Eze goal not been controversially cancelled out in March 2023, when QP led 2-1, those statistics would probably have made better reading however that game ended up in a 2-2 tie.

The good news for Queen’s Park is that Robbie Muirhead and George Oakley, who were regular thorns in their side, have moved on from Cappielow, however the bad news is that they remain in the Championship with Livingston and Ayr United respectively.

Morton have not sat still, and they have replaced Muirhead and Oakley with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Niall McGinn, and the one-time Aberdeen duo will need just as careful watching.

For the first time this season Callum Davidson, despite still having a host of players out, has a selection headache of the right kind throughout the pitch. Calum Ferrie can be selected, as he is free to return to league action in goal after a ban, Dane Murray is available after international duty for defensive work, Sean Welsh is in contention for a place in midfield and new-dad Zak Rudden could feature up-front.

Members of the Queen’s Park Media Team met up with Callum Davidson and skipper Dom Thomas to discuss the build up to the game and the dangers Morton possess.

Callum covered:

· A first time in Annan.
· Unlucky Morton against leaders Falkirk.
· Having (some choices!)
· Systems
· In My Life

The season so far
The visit of Greenock Morton is only Queen’s Park’s second home match in The Championship this season. The first was a credible 1-1 draw with Livingston with the three away games played seeing a win over Airdrieonians sandwiched between disappointments at Falkirk and Partick Thistle.

Jack Turner’s sixth goal of the season last weekend was enough to see off Edinburgh City and secure progression to the next stage of The SPFL Trust Trophy Cup with Morton also in the last sixteen after seeing off Cowdenbeath a week ago.

In the league Dougie Imrie’s side sit in eighth place on three points from their four games in comparison to Queen’s who reside two places above with a point more.

In the Premier Sports Cup Morton defeated Brechin City and Alloa Athletic however defeats from East Fife and St Johnstone ended their hopes of progression.

Their William Hill Championship campaign opened up with goalless draws against Partick Thistle and Hamilton Accies before a 1-1 tie with Livingston. Their last league outing was a painful one as a 2-0 lead was turned into a 3-2 defeat from visitors Falkirk.

Morton will come to Glasgow determined to get their first three-point haul and move above the hosts in the table.
