Templegate’s St Leger runner-by-runner guide
DEIRA MILE
EXTRA Mile. It’s a shame only seven runners line up as Owen Burrows’ colt has every chance of finishing third at a big price.
He shot to prominence when finishing a good fourth in the Derby at Epsom before a slightly disappointing effort in a Windsor Listed contest last time.
Moving up in trip looks a wise move as do the first-time blinkers given he’s not the easiest ride. He does have ability though.
GROSVENOR SQUARE
SQUARE fair. He just about looks the third string of the Aidan O’Brien team but he’s far from a forlorn hope.
This son of Galileo has taken his displays up a notch since tackling this trip. He was second in the Curragh Cup before winning the Irish St Leger Trial.
His staying power is an asset and he’ll go from the front. The worry is that he’ll set up the race for one of the others.
ILLINOIS
BIG Noise. He had his finest hour this season when winning the Group 2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot where this distance was right up his street.
He then performed with credit when second in the Grand Prix De Paris before going down in a tight finish for the Great Voltigeur Stakes to Los Angeles last time.
That drop to 1m4f didn’t help and he was really gaining at the line. Looks perfect for this test and will take some stopping.
JAN BRUEGHEL
JAN the man. The third of the O’Brien team has yet to taste defeat and pulled out more to win the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood last time.
That was just his third run and he looked green so you would expect plenty more today. He looks a certain stayer and main threat to the favourite.
SUNWAY
SUN shines. David Menuisier’s hope was beaten less than a length into second in the Irish Derby before a modest effort in the King George VI at Ascot last time.
He goes on any ground and is another who shapes as though staying will be his game.
Christophe Soumillon is an interesting jockey booking and he doesn’t have that much to find with the principals.
WILD WAVES
WAVE goodbye. Won a handicap over course and distance in June but has struggled twice since and needs massive improvement.
YOU GOT TO ME
GOT a chance. Was supplemented after her good second in the Yorkshire Oaks last time and her 3lb fillies’ allowance comes in handy.
She was impressive when winning the Irish Oaks and should stay. One of many capable of hitting the forecast spot.
Templegate’s St Leger tip and 1-2-3 prediction
ILLINOIS can leave the bookies in a state by winning the Betfred St Leger.
He has already proven his staying power by winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and was staying on strongly in the Great Voltigeur at York latest.
Unbeaten Ballydoyle stablemate Jan Brueghel looks the biggest threat but Irish Oaks winner You Got To Me is another to watch over a trip that should suit.
1st Illinois
2nd Jan Brueghel
3rd You Got To Me
