Third suspect charged in 2022 slaying of 12-year-old girl celebrating her birthday in West Englewood

A third person has been charged in the death of 12-year-old Nyzireya Moore who was fatally shot while out celebrating her birthday with family members in West Englewood on the South Side in 2022.

Rahdeem Calhoun, 23, is charged with first degree murder and was scheduled to appear for a detention hearing Friday, Chicago police said.

Nyzireya was riding in a car with family members about 7:50 p.m. March 1, 2022 when someone on the street opened fire in the 2300 block of West 72nd Street, about a block from where she lived, authorities said. She was wounded in the back of the head and taken to Comer Children's Hospital where she died three days later.

Calhoun, of Chicago, is the third person charged in the shooting that killed Nyzireya. Abdul Ali, 20, and Malik Parish, 22, were also charged with first degree murder in the shooting.

Surveillance footage showed the trio allegedly leaving a house in the 2300 block of West 72nd and walking to the corner, where they saw a rival gang member drive by in a Mercedes, prosecutors said at a court hearing for the case in 2022. Moments later, a stray bullet hit Nyzireya in the head while in her family's Buick SUV.

Months before Ali and Parish were taken into custody, authorities released surveillance video of the gunmen in an attempt to identify them.

Calhoun was scheduled to appear in court Friday.
