2024 Emmys: How much screen time does each Best Comedy Supporting Actor nominee have?

0

Heading into the 76th Primetime Emmys, Ebon Moss-Bachrach is heavily predicted to clinch a second consecutive supporting acting trophy for his work on the reigning (and likely upcoming) Best Comedy Series victor “The Bear.” Having previously succeeded by submitting his 13-minute and 15-second turn in the season one episode “Ceres,” he is now hoping to win voters’ favor with a performance that is 55% larger.

The six current comedy supporting actor contenders submitted performances that last for an average of 13 minutes and 14 seconds, or 39.45% of their single episodes. This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.

Since he clocks in at 20 minutes and 36 seconds in the “Forks” episode of his show’s sophomore season, Moss-Bachrach boasts a higher amount of actual screen time than any of his present competitors. However, his castmate, Lionel Boyce, happens to outpace him in a proportional sense, as his chosen 20-minute and 26-second performance takes up 69.07% of “Honeydew” compared to the defending champ’s even 59%.

Next on the physical time list is category veteran Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), whose submission, which aired on December 2 and was hosted by Emma Stone, runs at least half an hour longer than those of his challengers. Over 42% of his 11 minutes and 17 seconds (amounting to 16.76% of the episode) are spent playing ousted U.S. congressman George Santos in the cold open, complete with a parodic rendition of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind.”

Those who land physically lower but proportionally higher than Yang are Paul W. Downs (“Hacks”), Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”), and Paul Rudd (“Only Murders in the Building”), the middle of whom is on his third consecutive bid for the same series. His currently submitted turn takes up nine minutes and 14 seconds (or 42.91%) of “Double Date,” constituting a 66-second and 5% decrease compared to his 2023 entry. Downs appears in nine minutes and 37 seconds (or 26.61%) of “Bulletproof,” while Rudd is seen in eight minutes and 14 seconds (or 22.32%) of “Thirty.”
