Two hospitalized, one arrested after crash in Catskill

CATSKILL, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Greene County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash in Catskill that resulted in the arrest of one of the drivers. The crash happened on Tuesday afternoon on State Route 23 near Five Mile Woods Road.

On September 10 around 4:54 p.m., deputies arrived to the area after receiving a report of a car versus motorcycle crash with injuries. The preliminary investigation determined that Derik Wirhouski, 50, of Cairo, was driving a Subaru Impreza from Five Mile Woods Road north across State Route 23 when he allegedly drove past a stop sign and collided with a Honda Motorcycle carrying two riders heading westbound on State Route 23.

The riders, a 57-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, were both ejected from the motorcycle upon being stuck. Emergency medical personnel began life-saving measures on the two seriously injured victims before they were both transported to Albany Medical Center.

According to the sheriff's office, the man, who was taken to the hospital via emergency helicopter, is currently in critical condition, while the woman remains in stable condition. Wirhouski was taken into custody following the crash and now faces the following charges:

  • First-degree vehicular assault
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Reckless driving
  • Refusal to take breath test - traffic infraction
  • Failure to yield right of way at a stop sign - traffic infraction
  • Consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle - traffic infraction

Wirhouski was arraigned at the Town of Cairo Court before being remanded to the Greene County Jail on $75,000 cash bail.
