Sports Briefs: Marin Academy edges San Domenico in golf rivalry

Marin Academy handed San Domenico its first loss of the girls golf season, 204-213, at par 36 Peacock Gap on Thursday. The Panthers’ Mila Dawson earned medalist honors with a 44, followed by Lola Hu’s 46.

Elsa Anderson led the Wildcats with a 46, but it was freshman Isabel Acosta’s 53 in the last group that secured the win for Marin Academy. Freshman Jordan Kelly (52) and Sterling Colpitts (53) rounded out the lineup for Marin Academy.

The two rivals, now tied at 4-1, are scheduled to meet again at Peacock Gap on Oct. 10.

  • Two-time MCAL Player of the Year Elizabeth Liu shot a 39 at Peacock Gap on Thursday to lead the Branson School past Marin Catholic, 179-192. The Bulls (6-1) are setting themselves up to defend their MCAL title with another strong start. Lexi Ferguson was low medalist for Marin Catholic with a 43.

Women’s soccer

Former Tam High standout Yuna McCormack came in as a substitute in the 64th minute to help the U.S. under-20 national team advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a 3-2 extra-time victory against Mexico in Colombia on Wednesday night.

McCormack ended up playing about an hour as the game went 120 minutes plus stoppage time. Jordynn Araya Dudley scored the decisive goal for the United States in the 97th minute.
The U.S. is set to face Germany in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

  • Dominican University could not find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Men’s soccer

Joe Blakely and Patrick Zamora Salazar connected on a pair of first-half goals to lead Dominican University over Metro State University of Denver, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Field hockey

Junior Mattie Reale scored a goal and had two assists as Marin Catholic shut down Marin Academy, 5-0, on Thursday. Lola Bosch, Lucca Dietrich, Janet Rivera and Lucy Graham also scored for Marin Catholic (3-0), while Elsa Greene had an assist. Marin Academy (0-4) is scheduled to play Convent on Friday.

• Tam High beat host University, 3-1, on Thursday. The Red-tailed Hawks are 4-1 with games against Marin Catholic, Lick Wilmerding and Marin Academy remaining in the first half of the schedule.

Girls volleyball

Josie Campo had 12 kills, 12 digs, and three aces as Terra Linda stayed hot with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-19 win against Casa Grande on Wednesday night. The Trojans (11-2) also got 18 digs and two aces from Liza Reed, plus six kills and two blocks from Kayli Chen. The Trojans took down Novato in four sets in a non-league contest on Tuesday with Campo again leading the way with 11 kills and 21 digs. Mia Patino had 24 digs and Leah Mathewson had 25 assists.

  • Elsa Kehoe and Audrey Merk tied for team-high honors with 15 kills apiece as San Rafael outlasted Alameda 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 25-13 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs (13-5) also got 32 assists from Abby Sims, 23 digs from Olivia Dugan, and five kills and three blocks from Fatih Pu’u.

Tennis

The annual Tiburon Challenger returns to the Tiburon Peninsula Club on Sunday, Sept. 30 for a week of elite exciting tennis featuring some elite players. The tournament, which in recent years has included 2023 and 2024 US Open semifinalists Alex Michelson and Ben Shelton, and Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, the US Open doubles champions from 2021-23.
