'Damaged' Trump is acting like a 'cornered sewer rat' and the GOP can't dump him: analyst

0

In the wake of Donald Trump's Tuesday debate performance that some Republicans called a "missed opportunity" and a "trainwreck," former Trump White House correspondent Brian Karem suggested the ex-president is in for the fight of his life — and that is not good news for the GOP.

Noting Vice President Kamala Harris' baiting prompted him to rage about immigrants eating America's pets, Karem said that now-viral soundbite makes Trump an even more "damaged" candidate.

As he wrote in his column for Salon, Republicans now find themselves in the same position Democrats did after President Joe Biden's devastating debate with Trump where critics said he seemed old and confused.

The difference, he noted, is that Democrats had the opportunity to change direction before their convention by lining up behind Harris.

"Trump is seen as old, out of touch and delusional. When Harris mentioned that Trump was still having 'a hard time processing' the fact that he lost the last election, to many people she was speaking directly to a loss of mental capacity," Karem wrote before saying of Trump, that he is now "a crushed lunatic. A cornered sewer rat. She reminded everyone that 200 former Republicans, including some of the highest members of the former Trump administration had endorsed her. He could only lamely say they were all bad people."

According to Karem, Trump's cornered rat routine after the fallout from the debate makes him — and his followers — dangerous and puts Republicans in a bad place.

"The Republicans themselves understand the desperation. Though they are at the same place the Democrats were in June, they are well past their national convention and cannot switch candidates as easily as the Democrats did after Biden’s lackluster performance in the June debate'" he wrote.

"In short, the Republicans are stuck with Donald Trump. Desperation is mounting as the GOP sees its chances to dominate either the Senate or the House dwindling."

After writing, "That makes Trump and his minions more dangerous by the day," he cautioned, "Be wary of that sewer rat."
