National council convenes to discuss ‘next steps’ for Cyprob ahead of UN meetings

The National Council is meeting on Friday under President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss updates and next steps ahead of the president’s departure for the UN general assembly in New York later this month.

Christodoulides is due to meet UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on September 23 and address the general assembly on September 25.

In August, speculation by the UN about the possibility of holding a tripartite meeting at UN headquarters had been positively received by the Republic but rejected by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

Diplomatic sources on Tuesday had said a tripartite meeting was not expected to take place before October.

The same sources said that the possible final date for a trilateral meeting will be decided after separate meetings held with Guterres and the two leaders on the sidelines of the UN summit.

According to reports, Tatar has stated said that on September 22 he will go to New York to meet Guterres.

The national council meeting is set to take place at the Presidential Palace at 10am.
