KBVO Game of the Week: Vandegrift scores late to edge Stony Point 35-28

0

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Vandegrift running Griffin Gorrebeeck scored on a 12-yard run with 3:54 left in the game and the Vipers hung on for a District 25-6A win over Stony Point 35-28 in KBVO's Game of the Week on Thursday at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.

The Vipers stuffed Stony Point on fourth down near midfield to get the ball for the game-winning drive, and it looked like the drive was going to stall after Vandegrift's mistakes brought up a third-and-19. Head coach Drew Sanders dipped into his bag of tricks, however.

Vandegrift executed the hook-and-ladder play to perfection to gain 23 yards to convert the long third down, and the Vipers then marched down the field. Gorrebeeck scored his second touchdown of the game on a 12-yard run to give Vandegrift the late lead.

Stony Point led 20-14 at halftime behind two interceptions on defense along with the chemistry of quarterback Kinnick Kalbus and receiver Tristan Rimes. Kalbus found Rimes for all three of the Tigers' first-half touchdowns, the latest one with 0:08 left in the half. Rimes scored on catches from 27, 8 and 19 yards to power the Tigers into the lead.

Gorrebeeck's pair of scores came in the second half, along with a Miles Teodecki pass to George Farley for a 12-yard touchdown. Stony Point's Erin Bolton had an 11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Vandegrift (2-1, 1-0 25-6A) has a bye next week and hosts Vista Ridge in a district game Sept. 27. Stony Point (1-2, 0-1) plays at Vista Ridge next week.
