Alasdair Gold reveals Spurs rejected multiple offers for midfielder this summer
Alasdair Gold reveals Tottenham turned down several offers for Alfie Devine this summer before eventually deciding to loan the attacking midfielder to Belgian side Waterloo.
Alfie Devine joins Westerlo on loan
Devine is widely seen as one of the best young players coming through the ranks at Hotspur Way, with many at Spurs expecting the youngster to push for a regular first-team role in the near future.
The 20-year-old impressed in pre-season last summer and showed plenty of promise again in the friendlies ahead of the new campaign.
The midfielder spent the first half of last season on loan at Port Vale and was one of the League One side’s stand-out players during that spell.
Spurs then decided to recall him in January and send him to Championship side, Plymouth Argyle, where he also shone after a tricky start.
Devine will now get a chance to prove his quality in the Jupiler Pro League, linking up with fellow Tottenham loanee Luka Vuskovic at Westerlo.
Spurs rejected option to buy deals for Devine
Gold has now revealed that various clubs tried to sign the young Spurs midfielder on a loan with an option to buy this summer but the Lilywhites had no intention of agreeing to such a deal.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel about Devine: “Straight loan, no option to buy.
“I think some clubs, from what I understand, were putting in bids for him of a loan with an option to buy, but Spurs weren’t looking at that because they believe he can be something pretty decent as time goes on.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Playing in the continent at this age will be good for Devine as it will help him mature as a player and as a person. The 20-year-old will undoubtedly return to Tottenham as a much better player next summer.
