Danny Rose admits he only struck the ball first time on his debut against Arsenal because he was scared about losing possession and allowing the Gunners to break away.

Danny Rose made his debut in the NLD

Although Rose later evolved into a top-class left-back, he was a winger when he first arrived at Tottenham from Leeds as a teenager.

He was handed his Premier League debut by Harry Redknapp in North London Derby against Arsenal in White Hart Lane back in 2019, starting on the right wing in place of the injured Aaron Lennon.

Many at the time were surprised by Redknapp’s decision to throw Rose in at the deep end rather than going with the more experienced option, David Bentley, but the youngster repaid his manager’s faith by giving the home side a lead with an absolute screamer.

After Manuel Almunia in the Arsenal goal punched away a corner-kick, Rose met it at the edge of the box with a fierce first-time hit which that rocketed into the roof of the net, with the youngster being mobbed by his teammates.

Danny Rose would never normally hit that

The goal will live long in the memories of Spurs fans but Rose admits that he would have not taken a shot at that moment if he had more experience.

When asked about his debut goal, the 34-year-old told The Gambling Zone YouTube channel: “It’s funny that, because I would never ever do that now. That was more out of nerves, in that I didn’t want to try to control the ball and then lose it and then Arsenal are on the counterattack.

“Now, I’d probably do anything but shoot, I’d look to control it, try to nutmeg somebody, I’d do anything but [shoot]. That was purely out of not wanting to lose the ball at the edge of the box. Luckily, I connected with it well and it went in!”

The funny thing about that game is that Rose had an absolute shocker apart from that one amazing hit, with the youngster looking extremely nervous every time he got on the ball.

In fact, he was so bad that he was hooked at half-time by Redknapp despite scoring that goal.
