Shane Waldron: Bears' personnel groupings 'on us, starting with me'

Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron took responsibility for some of the baffling personnel groupings in Sunday's opener against the Titans.

In part because two were banged up during the course of the game, the Bears played their top three receivers — DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze — together for only 10 snaps.

More glaringly, tight end Cole Kmet played only 48% of the team’s snaps — a smaller share of than free agent addition Gerald Everett, who played 61% percent of the time.

Speaking before Thursday’s practice, Waldron said Kmet’s snap count was the offensive coordinator’s responsibility.

“That’s more on us, starting with me, of getting the reps a little balanced out,” he said. “But it also goes back to playing efficient football.”

Kmet — who is in the first year of a four-year, $50 million contract extension he signed last training camp — said Wednesday that he “wasn’t freaking out” after getting only one target and playing half the team’s snaps.

“There’s a lot of newness here offensively,” he said.
