UN: UK donates £6 million to Afghanistan
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that the United Kingdom has contributed £6 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.
The organization noted that since its establishment in 2014, the UK has contributed a total of £304 million to the fund. Furthermore, in 2023 and 2024, the UK distributed approximately 43,000 educational materials across Afghanistan and provided training and stipends to 2,000 teachers, half of whom were women.
On Wednesday, September 11, OCHA revealed that an urgent budget of $603 million is required to address the needs of over 300 vulnerable villages in Afghanistan during the winter season. OCHA also specified that 171 districts have been prioritized as high need and 227 villages as medium priority.
The organization states that $104 million is necessary to meet basic needs, including food assistance, in the first quarter of 2025.
OCHA has reported a $2.3 billion shortfall in the humanitarian budget for Afghanistan for 2024.
According to OCHA, over 23 million people in Afghanistan require humanitarian aid, with 17 million being prioritized. On September 9, the organization announced Norway’s $1.8 million donation to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.
These efforts highlight the urgent need for continued international support and funding to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
Substantial contributions from countries like the UK and Norway are crucial, but significant funding gaps remain. The global community must rally together to bridge these gaps and ensure that the most vulnerable populations receive desperately needed assistance.
