THERE are some gardening jobs that are more exciting than others.

And weeding is arguably pretty low on the list in terms of the enjoyment factor.

But one gardening expert has revealed there’s an important reason why now is the best time to weed your green space.

“During winter dormancy, not only does your grass growth slow but weed growth slows too,” lawn care specialist Chrissie Handley said.

“This means that it’s an ideal time to tackle them so that they’re unable to grow rampantly in spring.”

And while the temperatures have dropped dramatically over the past week, it’s actually the perfect temperature to get weeding.

“Moist, loose soil can make it easier to pull weeds out by the root, so this process is best done in milder and wetter winter temperatures, rather than in freezing temperatures,” Chelsea, from onlineturf.co.uk told the Express.

Starting weeding now also means the weeds won’t grow back come spring – meaning it’s vital to get the job done properly.

“If you make sure you’ve removed the entire root of the weed, this will eradicate them entirely and ensure they won’t grow back,” she said.

Another important factor to remember is how to care for your lawn during particularly wet weeks – a common problem for UK residents.

“If, during winter, there has been significant rainfall, your lawn may be struggling to cope with the volume of water,” she said.

“You may find that the waterlogged areas clear up naturally when it is left to dry out.”

But if your garden needs a little extra help – there’s a garden tool you can use for that.

“If not, you can aerate the lawn with a garden fork to encourage drainage,” Chelsea added.

To help get rid of weeds, people often turn to viral TikTok hacks like covering them in boiling water.

But, pro Peter Chaloner, the managing director of Cobra lawnmowers, has urged gardeners to avoid following the crowds by testing out the hacks.

“Avoid using chemicals, boiling water and white vinegar that are rumoured to work as you run the risk of killing the surrounding grass and doing more harm than good,” he said.

“The more effective way is to simply dig.

“Take a hand trowel, or even a specialised weeding trowel, and dig around the weed but be sure to get deep under the root to make sure it is entirely removed.”
