UN Chief calls for accountability after 300 aid workers killed in Gaza conflict
The UN Secretary-General called the lack of accountability for the deaths of UN staff in Gaza unacceptable and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.
On Wednesday, Guterres told Reuters, “We have courts, but we see that court decisions are not respected, and this kind of impunity is entirely unacceptable and requires serious contemplation.” He reiterated that the situation in Gaza is completely unacceptable.
Antonio Guterres reported that nearly 300 aid workers, two-thirds of whom were UN employees, have been killed in Gaza. He emphasized that the lack of accountability for these deaths is deeply troubling and requires serious reflection.
In the most recent incident, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported that six of its staff members were killed on Wednesday in two Israeli airstrikes on a school in central Gaza. This incident has been described as the deadliest attack on the agency’s staff.
Hamas officials reported that at least 18 people, including UN staff, were killed in the attack. The Israeli military had previously stated that it targeted a “command and control center” of Hamas in the Nuseirat area of central Gaza.
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7 of last year, Gaza has become one of the most dangerous places for aid workers. The escalating violence has made humanitarian efforts extremely perilous.
The repeated targeting and deaths of humanitarian workers in Gaza underscore the urgent need for accountability and protection of aid operations. The international community must address these violations and ensure that humanitarian missions can operate safely and effectively.
Furthermore, the continued violence highlights the broader crisis in Gaza and the dire need for a sustainable resolution to protect civilians and support humanitarian efforts. Ensuring justice for the fallen aid workers and safeguarding future operations are critical steps in alleviating the ongoing suffering in the region.
