Relive the 2014 Royals season with a short film by Eric Hosmer’s media company
Has it already been ten years?
Ten years have already passed since the Royals won the 2014 American League pennant, their first playoff appearances in 29 seasons. Members of that team reunited in Kansas City earlier this summer, captured in a short film by the Royals and MoonBall Media, a production company headed by former Royals All-Star first baseman Eric Hosmer.
“You know, believe it or not we’re all still great friends,” said Hosmer. “We all see each other a great amount.”
The video, released this week by the Royals, revisits the 2014 season and how the team went from being a last place team early in the year, to making one of the most improbable runs in recent baseball history, culminating in a World Series visit.
With interviews with Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Jeremy Guthrie, Lorenzo Cain, Greg Holland, and Wade Davis, the film gets insights into how the team gelled as the season went along and began to believe they could go all the way.
“We played loose,” recalled pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who started Game 7 of the World Series against the Giants. “I think as we got closer to the end of the season, recognizing the playoffs was a real likelihood for us and so we just played every single day like it was our last.”
The video covers many memorable moments, from Jarrod Dyson’s backflip to Salvy’s game-winning World Series hit to the extra-inning hits in the ALCS against the Orioles. And check out the running time for the movie - 17:38. Real fans know.
Ultimately, that team fell just short, losing to the Giants in heartbreaking fashion. But it gave Royals fans the most thrilling ride they had experienced in decades, and set the stage for a championship run the next year.
“Just being a part of this organization, it changed my life and I think it made me the man I am today,” said All-Star outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who earned ALCS MVP honors that year. “Today I’m proud to to call myself a Kansas City Royal for the rest of my life.”
