Gamethread: Guardians at White Sox
Will the home losing streak continue?
The White Sox were shut out yesterday in what was an emergency bullpen game for the Gwhen their starter got hit by a line drive after two innings. The day before the first 20 batters were set down in order by a pitcher just brought up from Triple-A for his first big league game. Today they face a real major league pitcher who has been very good lately in Matthew Boyd, but maybe that’s what they need.
Trying to salvage a win in the series and end the 14-game home losing streak will be Davis Martin, who has pitched well since coming back from Tommy John surgery but has yet to get a win, what with pitching for the Sox and all. Last time out he was excellent against the Red Sox, giving up just one run and three hits in six innings, but Boston won the game 3-1.
Opposing Martin will be veteran lefty Boyd, who was out of a job until Cleveland signed him at the end of June and has proven the signing a good one by posting a 2.20 ERA over five starts. In a demonstration of how few Sox have been with the team long, despite Boyd’s many years with the Tigers, only Luis Robert, Jr., and Andrew Vaughn have ever faced him. What will face him is a Chicago lineup that has eight right-handed hitters, including the first six in the order.
Martin faces basically the same Guardian lineup as the past two games for the first seven slots, with only rookie shortstop Daniel Schneemann and catcher Austin Hedges spelling the regulars.
