Sports Briefs: Tam boys open water polo season with dominating win
Nine different Red-tailed Hawks scored as the Tam boys water polo team started its season with a 22-6 win over Berkeley (7-4) in a non-league game in Mill Valley on Wednesday.
Freshman Jasper Feldman led Tam with five goals, while senior Reed Hanna, a USC commit, scored four goals and notched four steals. Senior Fields Palmer added three tallies and four assists and fellow senior Andrew Sternfels scored three times with three assists. Senior Bern Kent and junior Declan Murphy added two goals each for Tam (1-0). Freshman goalkeeper Ethan Wallace made eight saves for the Hawks.
Girls volleyball
Natalia Clifford had 13 kills and five digs as Tam cruised past Maria Carrillo, 25-6, 25-9, 25-19, on Tuesday. Natalie Stanford added seven kills and three blocks for the Red-tailed Hawks (8-3), who face Ukiah on Thursday before opening league play with a home game against San Rafael on Friday. Emmeline Sandgren added 23 assists and five aces and Jade Curtin-Savala had a team-high four blocks.
- Terra Linda dropped the opening set in a non-league game against Novato on Tuesday, before recovering for a 20-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-15 victory. The Trojans (10-2) open up MCAL play at home against Branson next Wednesday. Novato (4-7) hosts Archie Williams in its league opener on Friday.
- Redwood sustained its first loss of the season against St. Francis, falling in five sets, 25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 8-15 on Tuesday. The Giants (5-1) travel to San Marin to kick off MCAL play on Friday.
- Marin Academy dropped a four-setter against Cardinal Newman on Tuesday. The Wildcats (6-3) open BCL West play next Tuesday with a home game against University.
Girls tennis
Tam High’s Maya Risgaard outlasted Marin Catholic’s Payton Greco in a taut matchup Wednesday as the Red-tailed Hawks beat the Wildcats, 5-2, in Mill Valley. Risgaard held off Greco 7-6 (1), 6-0 at the top of the singles ladder. Tam got wins from Maria-Jose Stuart, Siena Mosley and Annika Hakes to sweep singles play.
Mosley took a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win from the Wildcats’ Christiane Zuber at No. 3 singles.
- Redwood High’s Lina Klompus took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Archie Williams’ Delphina Dong in a matchup at No. 4 as the Giants swept the singles ladder to lead the Giants past the Peregrine Falcons, 6-1 in Larkspur on Wednesday. The pair of Amara Lee Watson and Sam Dronn earned a 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 victory at No. 3 doubles as the Falcons avoided the shutout.
- Terra Linda swept San Rafael, 7-0, in Wednesday’s rivalry showdown, with the Trojans’ Kylie Lee, Jamie Schmidt, Chloe Sason and Mimi Kemp winning singles matches. The Bulldogs nearly broke through at No. 3 doubles, as Karla Jovel and Alana McCracken pushed the Trojans’ Coral Billisi and Beatrix Wilbur before falling 7-6 (4), 6-4.
- Clare Zhu and Emily McCoy swept their singles matches as San Marin shut out Novato, 7-0, on a windy Wednesday. Zhu, at No. 1 singles, and McCoy at No. 3, both won 6-0, 6-0. The Mustangs’ Brooke Bested, at No. 2, and Payton Short at No. 4, both won 6-0, 6-1.
Girls golf
San Marin held off Tam on Wednesday for a 199-209 victory. Tam’s Alessia Ducati took low medalist honors with a 44 at Indian Valley. The Mustangs’ Valentina Gudino was close behind at 45.
Football
Former Marin Catholic and current Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was selected as part of the second class to join the California High School Football Hall of Fame. Goff, a 2013 Marin Catholic graduate, is in good company with 1983 Palo Alto High grad Jim Harbaugh and 1958 Clovis grad Daryle Lamonica among the 20 newest inductees.
The inaugural 2023 HOF class included Marcus Allen, Don Mosebar, Warren Moon, John Lynch, Marshawn Lynch and Napoleon Kaufman.
The Class of 2024 will be honored on Saturday, Nov. 30 during the UCLA vs. Fresno State game at the Rose Bowl Stadium.
Tennis
The annual Tiburon Challenger returns to the Tiburon Peninsula Club on Sunday, Sept. 30 for a week of elite exciting tennis featuring some elite players. The tournament, which in recent years has included 2023 and 2024 US Open semifinalists Alex Michelson and Ben Shelton, and Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, the US Open doubles champions from 2021-23.
