The MTV Video Music Awards, which will take place on Wednesday, September 11, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, have blessed us with some of the most shocking, unforgettable, and bizarre red carpet looks of all time — from Lil’ Kim’s custom purple pastie and Pamela Anderson’s pink fur hat to Aaliyah’s animal-print Roberto Cavalli look and Lady Gaga’s meat dress. There are no unspoken rules about what celebrities can or cannot do, unlike more formal red carpets such as the Oscars or Golden Globes. So for people like us who love mess and chaos, it’s by far the most entertaining awards show of the year. Stay tuned (on Paramount+, YouTube TV, or MTV.com) to see what the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet has in store.

Taylor Swift

There are few things Taylor Swift loves more than a fashion trend that was popular in 2015, and this look is no exception — from the choker necklace all the way down to the thigh-high boots.

Chippy

We started off strong with someone named Chippy (?) wearing a literal chip. Several points for audacity; zero points for creativity.

Katy Perry

Yes, that’s a QR code tattoo on Katy Perry’s lower back. Here’s hoping it’s temporary…

Lil Nas X

This one made me laugh, I can’t lie. Lil Nas X is an entertainer in every sense of the word, and that’s why we love him.

Anitta

During a pre-show interview, the singer teased that there’s a reason for her bridal look but said she can’t reveal it just yet. I’m intrigued!

Sean Bankhead

This is fun, actually. Weird? Yes. But also fun (and surprisingly flattering for head-to-toe animal print).

Teddy Swims

The red-tented glasses are throwing me off here. I’m also not sure what’s going on with this print?

Chanel West Coast

Burn these tights!

Chet Hanks

His new reality show, The Surreal Life, is really good — this look is not. I’m particularly confused by the lace-up shoes that seem to be a hybrid of sneakers and boots.

Dora Jar

Note: The weather forecast in New York (where the VMAs are currently taking place) is showing no signs of rain.

Tyler Posey

The Teen Wolf alum looked *extremely* casual in camo cargo pants, sneakers, and a T-shirt.

Lauren Sorrentino and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino

A member of the Jersey Shore squad wearing a bright-yellow Versace shirt to the VMAs just feels right, you know?

Addison Rae

One thing about me? I’m an Addison Rae apologist. She’s the ultimate Gen-Z “It” girl in my book. That being said, this look is absolutely not working. Not only is it ill fitting, but it also feels a bit messy. (Sorry!) I would’ve loved to see this sans the feathers, styled with sleek hair and a simple stiletto. This choice is especially disappointing since we’re seeing it on the heels of her “Diet Pepsi” music video, which was practically flawless.

Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff

With famous friends, family members, and a slew of high-profile projects under their belts, Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff are a quintessential Hollywood couple. They always look so famous, but tonight they look like people you’d meet at a high school friend’s fall wedding. The fact that it’s so unexpected (in the best way) earned them a spot on this list.

Plasma and Amanda Tori Meating

Finally some good camp on this carpet, courtesy of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16 stars Plasma and Amanda Tori Meeting.

Insane Clown Posse

Hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse arrived wearing their signature face paint and suits that are certainly eye-catching.
