Taylor Swift Thanked ‘My Boyfriend Travis’ at 2024 MTV VMAs
Fresh off a post-debate endorsement of Kamala Harris, the self-proclaimed “childless cat lady” was in the house at Wednesday night’s MTV VMAs. Before even stepping on the red carpet, Taylor Swift had already taken home a fan-decided award for Song of the Summer for “Fortnight.” But of course, it wouldn’t be a proper awards ceremony if it didn’t end with the 34-year-old cleaning house. Closing out the evening, Swift was awarded Video of the Year (presented by Burger King, for some reason) alongside her “Fortnight” contributor, Post Malone. After Swift name-checked “my boyfriend Travis” in her acceptance speech, I nearly lost my hearing from all the shrieks in the crowd. While Travis Kelce wasn’t actually in the audience, he was certainly top of mind for one Taylor Allison Swift: “Everything this man touches turns to happiness, fun and magic.” For her final act, the pop star ended her speech with a call-to-action, urging viewers to register to vote for the upcoming election. Civic responsibility is alive and well!
Earlier in the evening, Swift made her surprise red carpet appearance in a plaid “printed technical taffeta bustier” and black gloves from Dior that looked to be an impressive mash-up of aesthetics from Clueless and Tomb Raider. Kudos to her for taking risks, I think. Does this mean the singer’s Reputation era is up next for a rerelease?
Heading into the evening, Swift led the pack of honored artists with 12 nominations, followed closely by Post Malone’s 11 nods. Fittingly, the duo were quickly summoned onstage to accept Swift’s second award of the evening, again for “Fortnight.” After getting an enthusiastic hug from “King Swiftie” Flavor Flav, Swift acknowledged those affected by the 9/11 terror attacks before launching into gushing over her co-nominee, “Austin.” “He is the most down-to-earth person, so unfailingly polite; it has taken me forever to get him to stop calling me ‘ma’am,’” she said of Post Malone. He reciprocated by calling Swift a combination of “amazing” and “badass.” He’s got a way with words, that one.
As of last year, the Tortured Poets Department singer racked up 23 VMA awards. Had she surpassed 30 moon-people this evening, she would’ve toppled Beyoncé from her roost as the reigning queen of the VMAs. Sadly, that didn’t happen, but at least we didn’t have to cringe through another ill-advised Brittany Mahomes hug.
